A few weeks ago, I was chatting with Christy, a college friend and soon-to-be wedding client, about the details of her engagement session. She and her fiancé John had a particular spot in mind along the train tracks that run next to the LA River just south of Downtown. I was super excited and with just one word a small fraction of my excitement turned to anxiety. That word… film!
You see, Christy and I met in a photography class back in ancient times when they were still teaching film photography and I spent all my free time in the darkroom, so she was confident I was up for the task. Plus, she and John met while getting their masters in cinematography, so film has a little extra special meaning for them. I had been wanting to jump back into film for a while, so I took her request as a sign that it was time to go for it. I’m so glad I did! It was like riding a bicycle.
I have become some comfortable with my digital cameras, the patience and trust that shooting on film requires were skills I had nearly forgotten. There is something so satisfying about it especially when the photos turn out well. I did shoot a bunch with my digital camera too, not gonna lie. But, there is definitely a lot more film in my future.
